About Us
Background
- Madurai is still considered as a big village and rural city. It has more rural pockets and slum areas in and around Madurai
- As many of the families in this area depend largely on agriculture, allied, daily wage work and petty businesses for their livelihoods, finding it extremely difficult to meet their ends and hence they are unable to support their children’s higher studies and aspiration
- While there are plenty of organisations providing scholarships support and skill training for needy children, the children in this location are not aware of such opportunities and even if they aware they are unable to access it as they do not know how to access them
- There are few NGOs working in education, skill training and livelihoods sector, but their services are limited to their resources and reach
- In this context, a facilitation of support services for children in applying for financial and non-financial support for their higher education will play a key role in enhancing the lives and livelihoods of these deserving children in the district
The Project Idea
The main objective of this project is to set up a help desk that will facilitate access to scholarships, training and mentoring for children for their higher studies.
This help desk will
- Generate demand for scholarships, training and mentoring support for needy children through working closely with schools, colleges and local support groups like Rotary Clubs, Young Indians, etc
- Map available scholarships and other non-financial support (webinar, seminars, talks, courses, training, etc) for children through portals like Buddy4Study (https://www.buddy4study.com/), National Scholarship Portal (https://scholarships.gov.in/), etc
- Students identified through demand generation will be facilitated to apply for eligible scholarships by the help desk facilitator
- Help desk facilitator will track the progress of each application submitted, support the shortlisted children to attend interviews and prepare for the home visits by the respective scholarship giving organizations.
- The facilitator will track and support end to end processes till the application for the scholarships or other non-financial support is accepted or rejected
Plan & Expected Results
The plan is to facilitate 100 to 200 needy children every year in Madurai to apply for various scholarships and other non-financial support services.
This is a joint initiative of Nivethan Trust and Rotary Club of Madurai Innovators.
